Thursday April 26th 2007

June 25-28, 2007
Asilomar Conference Grounds
Monterey, California

Register Online
Early-bird registration available through May 25!

Please join us for the 10th Annual Society for Conservation GIS (SCGIS) Conference, June 25-28, 2007, in Monterey, California. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the conservation of natural and cultural resources through geospatial technologies.

The SCGIS Conference immediately follows the ESRI User Conference.

Call for Presentations
Participants are requested to submit presentation topics now. Consistent with the ongoing conference theme, Creating and Fostering Community, we ask that your presentation include a section (not the focus, just a section) on the community-building efforts of your conservation activities, with emphasis on the efforts of government agencies, academics, nonprofits, activists, and commercial groups to work together. Discuss benefits and challenges of forging partnerships with local and international communities and describe the pros and cons of your networking endeavors. Please share how you “broke down barriers” and how those efforts benefited your project.

Abstracts are due May 18, 2007.

If you have any questions or comments, please e-mail scgispapers@esri.com.

SCGIS Activities

Auction
SCGIS will conduct a silent and live auction during the conference to share treasures and artwork from around the globe. Please plan to donate an item from your culture, community, or country and come to the conference prepared to bid on some wonderful and exotic trinkets.

Map Gallery
Plan to submit a map or poster for the SCGIS Conference Map Gallery. The Map Gallery enables you to display your GIS accomplishments in conservation. The submission deadline is June 1, 2007.

More Information
Agenda details will be posted and updated as the conference approaches. Information on the field trip (Monterey Bay Aquarium, June 25) and training classes will also be posted soon. If you have questions, please contact us.

PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For information about this announcement, contact:

———————————————————————–

Wayland, MA, March April 18, 2007 – The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) has issued a Call for Participation (CFP) in the “Architecture Implementation Pilot,” which is a coordinated interoperability initiative of GEOSS, FedEO and Tri-Lateral initiatives. Responses are due by 11 May 2007 and the “Pilot Kickoff Meeting” will be held 5-6 June 2007 in ESRIN the European Space Agency’s establishment in Italy.

This CFP seeks participants in a coordinated Architecture Implementation Pilot. A Pilot is a collaborative effort that applies open standards for interoperability to achieve user objectives in an environment representative of operational use. Outcomes include best-practices and interoperability arrangements suitable for an operational capability.

This CFP seeks proposals from organizations involved with Earth Observation systems to:

* Identify components with services, e.g., portals, catalogs and other services;

* Participate in confirming the interoperability of those identified services using standards and interoperability arrangements as identified in the preliminary architecture of the CFP; and,

* Participate in the collaborative development of societal benefit scenarios to guide testing and demonstrations of the identified interoperable services.

The CFP was initiated to solicit response for the GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot. The Pilot aims to incorporate contributed components consistent with the GEOSS Architecture – using a solicited GEO Web Portal and a GEOSS Clearinghouse search facility – to access services through GEOSS Interoperability Arrangements in support of the GEO Societal Benefit Areas.

The Pilot benefits from the collaborative support of two OGC Interoperability Program Pilots:

* The Tri-Lateral Interoperability Pilot is a collaborative, operational test of open standards deployment, supporting collective requirements of organizations responsible for national and regional “Spatial Data Infrastructures” in Europe (INSPIRE), Canada (GeoConnections), and the U.S. Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC).

* The Federated Earth Observation Missions (FedEO) Pilot provides a broad international venue for operational prototyping and demonstration of Earth Observation (EO) data access harmonization, interoperability requirements and protocols as defined by the European Space Agency (ESA), together with other space agencies and other OGC members.

The Architecture Implementation Pilot CFP documents can be downloaded from http://portal.opengeospatial.org/files/?artifact_id=20953.The OGC

Wayland, MA, March April 18, 2007 – The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) has issued a Request For Quotations and Call for Participation (RFQ/CFP) to solicit proposals in response to requirements for the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) Interoperability Pilot.

The CGDI Interoperability Pilot is sponsored by GeoConnections, a Canadian partnership program whose primary objective is to evolve and expand the CGDI. GeoConnections is providing cost-sharing funds to offset expenses associated with the initiative. GeoConnections and the OGC intend to involve as many participants in the initiative as possible and thus are soliciting proposals that will enhance and/or make use of the initiative outcomes. Responses are due by 2 May 2007 and the Pilot Kickoff Meeting will be held the week of 25 June 2007.

Technology deployments will be complete by October 2007, followed by a

6 month pre-operational phase.

In the pilot, GeoConnections and provincial partners will test improved mechanisms for the distribution and update of framework data (geographic names, national road network, administrative boundaries, etc.), providing users with access to the most current and authoritative data, avoiding version disparities, and minimizing duplication. Provincial stakeholders will receive business consulting and technical assistance with the implementation of onsite OGC standards-based components. Assistance will include financial contributions for labour, software, and data publishing. The improvements will allow providers to maintain control over the data they own while contributing at the same time to a national view of that data. Project results will aid Canadian Council on Geomatics

(CCOG) members in planning the future implementation of a distributed architecture for GeoBase, a federal, provincial and territorial government initiative.

45th Annual URISA Conference Registration Opens

Tuesday April 03rd 2007

April 3, 2007 (Park Ridge, Illinois) – Program details and registration for the 45th Annual Conference of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) are now available online at http://www.urisa.org/conferences/annual/info. URISA 2007, themed “Sharing Technological Inspiration: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow”, is scheduled for August 20-23, 2007 at the Hilton Washington in Washington, DC. The conference will begin with twelve pre-conference workshops offering proven education and take-home workbook materials. More than 200 speakers from around the world will present at URISA 2007. The educational sessions are organized into the following topical tracks: Partnerships & Collaborations; Professional Development; Management; Data; Tools; Applications; Disaster & Emergency Response; Public Participation GIS (PPGIS); and K-12 Education.

Conference Highlights will include:

Hopeworks – Young people from the Hopeworks GIS program will provide what is certain to be an inspirational keynote presentation at the URISA conference, demonstrating their accomplishments. Visit www.hopeworks.org New Haven Census Use Study, 1967: Forty years ago, the New Haven Census Use Study presented its initial reports on computer mapping and address matching at the 1967 URISA conference. In this plenary session, several former CUS staffers recount their experiences with the Study and URISA, along with their thoughts on the impact of this work on GIS and society.

Summit on Cross-Organizational Collaboration – Conference attendees represent all areas of the spatial data community – government (international, federal, tribal, state/provincial, regional, county, city), academia, nonprofit, vendors – and there is no better venue than the URISA conference to sort out and establish collaborative relationships among the communities represented.

Networking – URISA conferences are known for their “hallway discussions” and the welcoming atmosphere. Lifelong friendships and working relationships begin and are nurtured at URISA.

Exhibit Hall – There is a good balance between intensive conference programming, networking, and opportunities to check out the latest technology being offered by vendors in the exhibit hall.

For detailed conference information, visit http://www.urisa.org/conferences/annual/info or contact any URISA staff member at 847-824-6300, e-mail info@urisa.org. For information about exhibiting, please contact Kim Green at 847-824-6300 or kgreen@urisa.org.

IOG-Geo, the Inter Provincial Organisation in which the 12 Dutch Provinces are working together in the field of geo-information and GIS, announces a new release of Flamingo MapComponents an interactive map system for broad target group.

With Flamingo MapComponents, organisations can share their geo-information as user-friendly interactive maps. Flamingo MapComponents is a powerful and interactive map system, and it offers an accessible package for map viewing. This modular system will be developed further by a community.

The current development status is Release Candidate 1.

Flamingo, the open source map viewer Provinces in the Netherlands use as a risk map and which has been deployed for a number of other uses, has been improved significantly on a number of points. Flamingo MapComponents is an open, flexible and accessible system for a broad audience.

Flamingo MapComponents is available in English, and is able to connect to multiple data sources. This means that one single map image can be created from several map services. The modularity has also been increased, meaning the viewer can be used in many different ways.

Thanks to the interaction between Javascript and Flamingo a map can very easily be integrated in a website. Furthermore, several map components are easily and simultaneously operated with one clear navigation bar.

The future success partly depends on the community. The community will have to grow and develop in line with the software. Up until now, the project has been kept rather small-scale, but the developers are working to set up an extensive community around Flamingo MapComponents.

At www.Flamingo-mc.org users can share their experiences with Flamingo MapComponents and their own map services with the rest of the community. This way, the site will be updated continuously with examples, how-to’s, and documentation.

Flamingo MapComponents is available in English and it supports the WMS, one of the worldwide open standards for web mapping by the Open Geospatial Consortium (www.opengeospatial.org). The system is open source with a GPL-licence.For more information about Flamingo MapComponents, visit the website www.Flamingo-mc.org. Anyone who is interested in Flamingo and wants to know more about it, will find this site a valuable source of information. Flash developers and web experts will find technical information and possible updates on the site.Contact:
