DELORME CONTINUES TO EXPAND GPS MARKET, WITH NEW $69.95 PRICE ON EARTHMATE(r) GPS FOR LAPTOPS

Includes Just-Released Street Atlas USA 2008 DVD Software

YARMOUTH, Maine ? DeLorme, the company that pioneered GPS for laptops and PDAs, announced today it has launched updated Street Atlas USA 2008 DVD software with the Earthmate GPS LT-20 at the new low price of only $69.95.The Earthmate GPS LT-20 features cutting-edge GPS technologies from STMicroelectronics and DeLorme, with fast satellite acquisition times and superior performance when dealing with reflected GPS signals ? a frequent occurrence in urban settings. The updated Street Atlas USA 2008 DVD software includes extensive revisions to its street-level detail for the United States and Canada and, for the first time, highways and major roads for Mexico.

Breakthrough New Low Price Expands the Market

The combination of the DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-20 and the included Street Atlas USA 2008 software means anyone with a laptop PC can enjoy the benefits of GPS wherever they travel in the U.S., Canada, and now Mexico, too.

“By continuously driving down costs and expanding sales through mass distribution we have been able to lower our price points for laptop GPS without compromising quality,” said Caleb Mason, DeLorme Director of Marketing. “Laptop GPS offers many advantages over other types, with the large screen providing easy-to-see, wide geographic context. With laptops continuing to replace desktops, we can offer more and more consumers an affordable yet powerful GPS solution to help plan trips and GPS navigate without getting lost.”

Ships with Updated DeLorme Street Atlas USA 2008 DVD Software

The new lower-priced Earthmate GPS LT-20 ships with updated Street Atlas USA 2008 DVD software, just in time for the busy summer travel season.

Using the DeLorme system is simple. After installing Street Atlas USA 2008 DVD on their laptop PC, users can create driving routes automatically, locate ideal overnight stops, find lodgings, food, and attractions; and devise itineraries, all in advance.

In-vehicle, the Earthmate can be secured next to the windshield. Its five-foot cable is more than ample even in motor coaches and big rig trucks.

With the software running, the Earthmate automatically begins tracking on pre-planned routes. Large, easy-to-read Next-Turn and Turn-After arrows and directions appear below the large map. Voice prompts announce upcoming turns, speaking the precise name of the road or exit. No extra subscription charges apply, nor is Internet access required. Everything needed is included in the Earthmate package.

“At the new low price of only $69.95, we hope people will buy an Earthmate to bring on their next trip. The product can be found at all major computer stores, making it easy to buy as a travel impulse item. By planning better and not wasting time getting lost, it seems likely the Earthmate will pay itself back on one long trip in gas savings alone,” said Mason.

Market-Leading GPS Capabilities

The software’s GPS capabilities are unsurpassed. In fact, DeLorme led the way with features such as voice-guided navigation that calls out street names and exit numbers, provides spoken responses to questions or commands; automatic back-on-track routing (in case of detours or unplanned side trips), and GPS Radar, to locate upcoming places of interest (fuel, lodging, restaurants, businesses) from a driver’s real time position.

Street Atlas USA 2008 DVD also includes four million updated places of interest including many chains researched by DeLorme’s in-house team of cartographers. DeLorme is one of a handful of mapmakers who still produce their own maps for GPS products, which means many customer revisions have been made as well as significant updates to streets and highways across the U.S., Canada, and now Mexico. The inclusion of major roads for Mexico means routes created in the U.S. and/or Canada can also automatically connect to the adjoining infrastructure within Mexico.

Available Aerial Imagery

Users can also download available aerial imagery of the U.S. to their laptops, PDAs, or supported phones running either Palm OS or Pocket PC. The imagery can be used for real-time GPS tracking, and is ideal for identifying landmarks, determining land use (e.g., residential, agricultural, or open space), and much more.

Street Atlas USA 2008 DVD comes with a free application for installing the software, with full routing and GPS navigation capabilities, plus aerial imagery,, on supported Palm OS and Pocket PC PDAs and touch screen phones.

The Earthmate GPS LT-20 is available wherever electronics and software are sold. It also can be ordered from DeLorme at www.delorme.com, or by phone at 800-561-5105. The suggested retail price is $69.95, with updated Street Atlas USA 2008 DVD software included. The software is also available by itself at most of the same locations, with a suggested retail of $39.95. A higher-end version of the software, Street Atlas USA 2008 Plus DVD, retails at $59.95. It offers additional features including data importing and geo-locating, large-format printing, and additional editing tools.

USGS Pilot Project Makes High-Quality Landsat Data Available Through Web

As of June 4, 2007, the USGS will be releasing selected Landsat 7 image data of the United States through the Web (glovis.usgs.gov or earthexplorer.usgs.gov). These data are of high quality with limited cloud cover.

This Web-enabled distribution of new and recently acquired data is a pilot project for the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM), currently projected for launch in 2011. The project will allow the Landsat data user community to help refine the distribution system planned for the upcoming LDCM. Each scene will be registered to the terrain, or “ortho-rectified,” prior to being placed on the Web. Copies of these data will also be available on CD or DVD at the cost of reproduction.

Landsat data have proven useful for a wide range of applications. From disaster monitoring after Hurricane Katrina and the Indonesian tsunami to global crop condition analysis, Landsat data are being used by scientists around the world. The Web-based distribution system will allow the user community easier access to Landsat 7 data.

The pilot project will be carefully examined. Customer response will be evaluated and their insight will influence the future distribution system.

USGS Has Science that Weathers the Storm

Tuesday May 29th 2007

-In recognition of National Hurricane Preparedness Week, the USGS has initiated specific actions to prepare for the impending hurricane season that runs June through October.- Improved monitoring of conditions on the ground from flooding and storm surge, enhanced ability to navigate in a disaster zone, and better assessments of the effect on coastlines and ecology are among the benefits anticipated from these actions.

Enhanced Monitoring of Floods and Storm Surge

Four major actions are underway to prepare for monitoring floods arising from hurricanes and other tropical storms. USGS activities include 1) strengthening streamgages along the Gulf Coast; 2) implementing rapidly deployable, mobile gages on streams; 3) developing capabilities to measure hurricane-driven storm surges; and 4) installing an emergency satellite-communications and data-distribution system. These activities are coordinated with the National Weather Service, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and other Federal, State, and local organizations.

“These coordinated actions will ensure timely and uninterrupted water information for forecasters, emergency managers, scientists and the general public,” says Robert Hirsch, USGS Associate Director for Water. “Improved flood monitoring and assessment will help reduce the risks to coastal communities, property, and human life.”

In 2005, many USGS streamgages along and inland of the Gulf of Mexico were damaged or destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The damage resulted in interruptions of streamflow and water-level data needed during the storm by forecasters, emergency managers, and dam and levee operators. The USGS is currently strengthening or “hardening”120 gages along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas.

RICHARD SPOONER APPOINTED BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER FOR GETMAPPING

Getmapping has appointed Richard Spooner as its strategic business development manager.

Park Ridge, IL – With the April 2007 cohort of Certified GIS Professionals (GISPs) the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI) surpassed the 1,500 GIS professional milestone. The first group of GISPs was certified in October of 2003 as a result of the pilot program used to test the rigor of the process. The Institute formally opened its doors on January 1, 2004. There are now 1,540 GISPs as of April 25, 2007.

“Increasing numbers of GIS professionals are realizing the value of professional certification in dealing with other professionals,” said GISCI President Bruce Joffe, GISP. “Increasing numbers of non-GIS managers, and human resources professionals, are relying on ‘GISP’ to indicate a GIS professional’s experience and education.”

April was additionally historic as GISCI welcomed its largest cohort of GISPs on record. 61 GISPs were certified in April putting it slightly ahead of the largest previous cohort of 58 GISPs certified in March 2004.

GISCI expected the growth of applications to remain steady in 2007 but numbers appear to be swelling. Already the number of GISPs has surpassed initial estimates for the first quarter. GISCI attributes the growth to better recognition of the credential by the industry, GISP-to-colleague networking, and the importance of properly defining GIS as a profession.

Applications are processed individually and then verified as part of a monthly group. This makes it impossible to determine the identity of the 1,500th GISP. All members of the April 2007 cohort can take pride in knowing it was their application that helped GISCI attain this important achievement. Credit also goes to the 1,479 GISPs who preceded them.

The full manifest of Certified GIS Professionals is on the website. To download application materials or for more information regarding the GISCI Certification Program visit www.gisci.org or call (847) 824-7768.

UPC WIND MANAGEMENT SELECTS DELORME XMAP(r) TO DETERMINE OPTIMAL PLACEMENT FOR TURBINES

YARMOUTH, Maine – DeLorme, the innovation leader in mapping, GIS, and GPS technology, is pleased to announce that its XMap GIS software has been selected by UPC Wind Management, LLC to help with the optimal placement of wind turbines.

XMap is an affordable, easy-to-use mapping and GIS software suite that integrates advanced geospatial data management into DeLorme’s core GPS mapping framework. It provides easy-to-use GIS functionality that is especially well suited for new GIS users.

Using the 3-D terrain modeling capability found in XMap, UPC technicians are able to remotely evaluate locations for turbine placement eliminating laborious and time-consuming field work.

By integrating existing GIS data layers, UPC technicians are able to compile a more complete picture of a site in question, with layers such as property ownership, wind patterns, and land cover. Ultimately the availability of such a variety of information allows UPC to accurately determine the suitability of a particular site.

With XMap’s included in-vehicle GPS navigation capability, UPC field crews can quickly and efficiently find their way to the work site. They can even add routable roads to the base map to reflect new construction around a wind farm project.

“XMap is ideally suited to our workflow,” said Chris Caffyn, Development Manager at UPC. “It offers the right combination of mapping tools and is straightforward enough that all of our staff can use it.”

To help streamline the deployment of XMap, UPC participated in a customized online training program. A training specialist from DeLorme provided instruction on the use of XMap and how it specifically relates to wind turbine placement.

“The training program provided the introduction that we needed to get up and running with the software,” added Caffyn. “It helped to learn how the software will help us meet the challenges that we face.”

About DeLorme: Located in Yarmouth, Maine, DeLorme has 30 years of cartographic and software experience and over 130 employees dedicated to creating the best in mapping, GIS, and GPS products.
