Germany’s Birth Rate
According to the latest statistics, 707,778 babies were born in Germany in 2005. This equates to approximately 8.6 “new citizens” per 1,000 inhabitants per year. Noticeable differences exist in the birth rates of individual regions and districts. Northern Westphalia, western Lower Saxony and all of southern Germany have above average birth rates, while most of former East Germany has a birth rate lower than the national average.

The birth rate is not just a social barometer, but also an economic one, as population growth bears directly on market potential. For example, the number of births directly correlates to the number of potential consumers for specific infant products within a given region. Also, it stands to reason that where there are many infants, there are also parents of a certain age
group with distinctive consumer needs and interests.
Close scrutiny of birth rate trends allows one to track and calculate precisely certain societal developments, such as the number of kindergarten places needed or the level of demand for schoolbooks.
The fact that some mid-sized cities are shown to have significantly higher birth rates than those of the surrounding regions is due to the method of calculation: The place of birth is often not the place of residence. Particularly in rural areas, most children are born in a few central hospitals and birth clinics (Data source: GfK GeoMarketing).

Already in use by a leading global Telecommunications company, the new iSMART release provides major advances in enterprise grade pure web editing capabilities for Geospatial data
17 July 2007, Dublin, Ireland, eSpatial, a leading provider of enterprise geospatial software and solutions today announced the availability of iSMART 5.3, a new version of its Geospatial software product which now includes new Web 2.0 web based editing solution for Geospatial data.
iSMART 5.3 provides the ability to deliver web browser based, integrated business applications featuring user editing and viewing capabilities usually only available in traditional desktop-installed GIS and CAD tools.
This unique approach delivers major advantages. Developers can directly embed GIS capabilities in modern web based business applications. This provides the ability to directly control the features and capabilities available to an end-user based on the specific task and workflow being carried out. The iSMART solution consolidates business and spatial data (e.g. separate CAD / GIS files) into a single seamless environment in Oracle. These web spatial editing capabilities are powerful enough to replace traditional desktop-installed specialist GIS Tools for a large variety of business solutions.
“Web 2.0 technologies such as AJAX and JSON enable web based applications to provide capabilities and interactivity traditionally only available on desktop tools” said Eamon Walsh, CTO eSpatial, “We are using these technologies for geospatial data editing, providing enterprise-grade geospatial multi-user data capture and editing facilities for pure web applications”.
The new Web Editing technology is already in use by Verizon as a core component of a new National Engineering and Outside Plant Planning application called VEGA (Verizon Enterprise Geospatial Application). Verizon Communications Inc. is one of the largest Telecommunications Companies in the world with revenues of $88 Billion in 2006.
Delivered as a set of Java Server Page (JSP) tags and an AJAX based development library, the new capabilities allow developers to produce custom applications featuring capabilities such as digitizing, editing, snapping, labeling, undo/redo and multiple selection – all within a browser based application with no plug-ins or ActiveX controls. In addition, data can be exported to a number of common formats including MS-Excel, SVG, PDF & common image formats.
“eSpatial has led the way in delivery of web-based, enterprise grade geospatial applications for many years now” said Philip O’Doherty, CEO eSpatial, “This new capability builds on our successes and takes our technology to the next level bringing this approach to enterprise solutions to deliver

Omaha, NE — Mapping Nebraska Communities will be the focus of beginner- level workshops offered in Omaha, Nebraska to teach the fundamentals of using GIS and Census data for community analysis. Presented by New Urban Research Inc. the workshop is designed for social service providers, academic researchers, urban planners and anyone who performs community demographic analysis for governmental or private organizations.
“Mapping Nebraska Communities: Introduction to GIS & Community Analysis”
will be offered in Omaha on July 26th, 2007, its a one day class and costs
$399 per person. No previous GIS experience is necessary. Information and registration are available at
www.urban-research.info.“Any organization that seeks federal funding to perform public health, economic or educational development is required to provide demographic analysis on populations within specific geographic areas,” said Gina Clemmer, President of New Urban Research. “We teach students how to access Census data files online and then use the GIS to extract specific demographic information and map the results down to the neighborhood level.”
New Urban Research, a professional social research organization, customizes the GIS exercises and demonstrations in each class with geographic and mapping data relating to the state where the workshop is being held. During the class, participants will be shown how to download Census data relating to poverty, race, language, education and other variables for their communities and integrate these files with their own data sets for analysis in the GIS.
Using ESRI ArcGIS 9.2 software, participants will leave the class with a thorough understanding of three core GIS applications:
Thematic Mapping – Attendees will create color-coded maps of their data that displays information trends.
Geocoding – Attendees will map the addresses of their projects, clients or incident areas.
Spatial Analysis – Attendees will extract and map subsets of variables from Census data.
Workshop participants will also receive a free 30-day subscription to the Shapefile Warehouse, an archive of Census Bureau data in GIS-ready data files. For every county in the United States, New Urban Research has obtained the 20 most common geographies (Street Networks, Political Boundaries, Census Blocks/Tracts, Traffic, etc.) from 2005 Census TIGER files and converted them to ESRI shapefile formats ready to import into a GIS. Participants may also purchase ESRI ArcGIS 9.2 site licenses from New Urban Research following the workshop.
Introducing more than 6,000 participants to GIS technology in the last year alone, New Urban Research receives high praise for its hands-on workshops.
According to a Representative of the Womens Prison Association in New York City, “[The workshop provided a] very clear and comprehensive presentation on how to create analytically useful and aesthetical maps. I like the structure of the workshop, the relevance of the exercises and the additional materials and online resources.”

1Spatial participated in the first of three thematic meetings focusing on Information Management Standards and Data Quality for ePSIplus in London.
1Spatial were invited to speak on data quality at the event, with a presentation by Steven Ramage entitled ‘Improving Quality for PSI Re-use’. ePSIplus is a Thematic Network, funded by the eContentplus programme, to support the implementation of the European Directive on Public Sector Information (PSI) Re-use, in the period leading up to its review in 2008.
More than 15 Member State representatives from across Europe attended the event. The main objective of the meeting was to gather information from those organisations involved in the public sector across Europe and determine best practice for PSI re-use.
Steven presented case studies from a number of 1Spatial customers in this sector, including AdV Germany, City of Amsterdam, City of Oslo, IGN Belgium, OSNI and the Environment Agency in England and Wales. He covered a number of general issues related to data quality and focussed on spatial data quality since a large percentage of public sector information is geographic in nature; principles from INSPIRE, the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe, also align well with the PSI Directive. He explained some of the challenges faced when aggregating and harmonising spatial data and pointed out the risk management and supply chain considerations when tackling spatial data quality.
Steven Ramage, Business Development Director at 1Spatial, commented:
“It was an honour to speak at such an international gathering. There were some really useful presentations from my co-presenters, such as Mary Rowlatt from Essex County Council and Serge Brack from the Office for Official Publications of the European Communities. There is a great deal of awareness still required in this area and extensive work to be done in determining fitness for purpose for spatial data sets, as well as other sources of public sector information.”
Brian Green, ePSIplus Analyst responsible for Management, Standards and Data Quality, added:
“We are grateful to 1Spatial for an important and meaty contribution to this lively and valuable meeting.

Purchasing Power for Sports and Camping Equipment
Citizens in the Munich and Nuremburg areas have the highest per-capita spending potential for sports and camping equipment in Germany. By contrast, the purchasing power for this particular product line is below average in all East German federal states.
GfK GeoMarketing brings you a map of Germany that details the nationwide distribution of the purchasing power for sports and camping equipment (Graphic and data: GfK GeoMarketing).
GfK GeoMarketing calculates purchasing power data for 60 retail product lines, including the food sector. The data are available on various regional levels, e.g. postal codes, municipalities, or federal states. Companies can utilize this information to assess regional sales potential, plan sales territories and new chain store locations, or tailor their product positioning strategies accordingly.
