New HIV Infections in Europe: 2006 Figures

Picture of the Month

New HIV Infections in Europe: 2006 Figures

With 2,718 cases, Germany has the sixth highest rate of new HIV infections in Europe for 2006 according to figures provided by the World Health Organization (WHO). Russia has the highest number of new cases (approx. 39,207), followed by the Ukraine (approx. 13,256), the United Kingdom (approx. 8,925) and France (approx. 5,750). The WHO recorded a total of 86,912 new cases of infection across Europe in 2006.

HIV thus remains one of Europe’s key health concerns. Although the rate of infection is falling in Western and Central Europe, it continues to climb in Eastern Europe, which is responsible for 69% of all new infections in 2006.

To mark World AIDS Day on December 1, GfK GeoMarketing is providing an overview map of Europe that illustrates the distribution of new HIV cases per 10,000 inhabitants as well as country-specific figures (Data source: WHO/GfK GeoMarketing; base map: GfK GeoMarketing).
