Stevenage, Herts. 28 August, 2008.

29th August 2008, Cambridge, UK. 1Spatial, Britain’s leading provider of spatial data management software announces the opening of its first Australasian office, in Melbourne, Australia.

One of 1Spatial’s main growth areas over the past three years has been in Australia, where, according to a study carried out in March 2008 by ACIL Tasman, the spatial information industry is a major contributor to the Australian economy, generating revenue of $1.37 billion in 2006-07.

The Cambridge-based company has been providing spatial data management software to state land departments, government organisations and utilities providers in Australia for the last three years through its partners, Open Spatial and more recently Geomatic Technologies. Over those three years the company has seen growth in revenues from the region of well over 50% per year and expects to maintain that growth rate in the coming three years.

With the spatial data market opening up in Australia, it is hoped that this new regional office will facilitate 1Spatial’s continued growth. The direct presence in Australia will also serve as additional support for 1Spatial’s indirect channel through Open Spatial and Geomatic Technologies.

Earlier this month 1Spatial announced the launch of the first phase of a new web based distributed data maintenance service for one of its most significant new clients, the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Victoria, won in conjunction with Australian partner Geomatic Technologies and eSpatial, a 1Spatial partner based in Ireland.

Another key customer in the region is PSMA Australia Limited, who is responsible for combing spatial data from Australia’s governments to create national spatial information. 1Spatial’s Radius technology is used by PSMA to ensure the accuracy of all the spatial data used across each of the individual states and territories of Australia, and to enable the integration of this data.

Dan Paull, CEO of PSMA, commented, “1Spatial has been a key partner in our quest to re-engineer the processes that deliver the nation’s premium national spatial information datasets.

PSMA Australia purchases 1Spatial’s Radius Studio

Wednesday August 27th 2008

27th August 2008, Cambridge, UK. 1Spatial is delighted to announce that PSMA Australia have purchased their Radius Studio product to provide data quality conformance services.

PSMA Australia Limited combines spatial data from Australia’s governments with leading-edge technology to create national spatial information datasets that include features such as roads, street addresses and cadastral and administrative boundaries. These datasets are then utilised by a network of partners who develop products and services that present the data in meaningful and useful ways for a wide range of industry, government and community uses that deliver economic, environmental and social benefits to the whole of Australia.

PSMA Australia receives data from multiple sources in multiple formats, from across Australia. The data is then integrated to produce datasets that provide seamless and consistent national coverage on a 90-day update cycle. Data quality forms a vital part of this procedure, and 1Spatial’s Radius Studio will provide an automated solution to ensuring a high level of data quality throughout the integration process.

Radius Studio provides automated conformance checking of spatial data against a pre-defined set of business rules certifying the quality of, firstly, the source data, and secondly, the integrated dataset, which will be delivered to the customer. The benefit of this rules-based approach is the assurance of the overall data quality and the automation enables increased efficiency and productivity, which ultimately leads to savings in resources.

In the longer term, Radius Studio will also form part of PSMA Australia’s LYNX infrastructure. LYNX will provide enhanced mechanisms to perform data integration and delivery between PSMA Australia and the various data providers (custodians) and their clients. The system will utilise the latest web technologies and architecture to enable PSMA Australia to:

Provide an enhanced product and service
Obtain a broader market reach
Increase value for the data custodians and their clients
The use of Radius Studio in this process will simplify the existing supply chain and increase the overall efficiency of the system.

Dan Paull, CEO of PSMA said:

“The demands associated with development and maintenance of these datasets is significant and with user awareness comes an increasing demand on quality and update frequency. 1Spatial’s Radius Studio will enable PSMA Australia to streamline business processes and ultimately deliver higher quality data more frequently to our clients.”

Duncan Guthrie, Managing Director of 1Spatial added:

“PSMA Australia has a proven track record as one of the leading organisations involved in spatial data integration and management in Australia. We are very pleased that Radius Studio will form a key part of their future service, delivering high quality spatial data to the Australian market place.”

Safe Software Delivers Support for CityGML Data

Thursday August 21st 2008

Vancouver, BC, August 21, 2008 – Safe Software announced today that its software solution FME, the recognized standard in spatial ETL (extract, transform and load), now offers complete support for CityGML.

The FME 2009 beta introduces the ability to write CityGML data, adding to the read support which has been available since the format’s early draft stages. This combination of read and write capabilities enables CityGML users to communicate in the common specification while still using their preferred systems for data analyses. FME Server, Safe Software’s spatial data distribution solution, will also be extended in 2009 to add capabilities for sharing CityGML data via the OGC web feature service (WFS) protocol.

In addition to the complete support offered in FME for the widely used draft CityGML 0.4, Safe Software is already actively updating FME to support CityGML 1.0, announced yesterday by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) as an official specification. CityGML has been adopted as a common information model for the representation of 3D urban objects, providing a standard means by which to share urban spatial data.

“Finally we have a common standard for people serious about implementing 3D city models that take us beyond beautiful visualizations. Combining quality graphics with robust information and topological models, CityGML will change the way professionals manage virtual cities,” says Tim Case, Chair of the OGC 3D Information Management Working Group.

“This open, interoperable and extensible platform has already been effectively implemented in dozens of jurisdictions,” Case adds. “However, the incorporation of CityGML read/write support into FME is perhaps the single most important next step towards broad adoption of 3D city models in the geospatial industry. I look forward to the rapid adoption of this platform which is designed to support next generation 3D solutions.”

Safe Software has been proactively providing read/write capabilities for OGC standards since the preliminary stages of GML in 2001. Today, FME supports OGC WMS, WFS, GML, and KML along with CityGML.

“We are committed to supporting OGC standards and encouraging data interoperability in the various segments of the spatial data world, including 3D,” says Don Murray, President of Safe Software. “This in mind, extending our support for the newest OGC specification, CityGML, was a natural choice. We look forward to seeing the power of data interoperability that CityGML holds unfold in projects around the globe.”

FME provides data conversion capabilities to users around the world. To learn more, visit safe.com or email info@safe.com. FME 2009 is anticipated for release in early 2009. Until then, the FME 2009 beta is available at www.safe.com/beta.

About CityGML
CityGML is a common information model for the representation of 3D urban objects. It defines the classes and relations for the most relevant topographic objects in cities and regional models with respect to their geometrical, topological, semantical and appearance properties. Included are generalization hierarchies between thematic classes, aggregations, relations between objects, and spatial properties. These thematic information go beyond graphic exchange formats and allow to employ virtual 3D city models for sophisticated analysis tasks and navigation in different application domains like simulations, urban data mining, facility management, and thematic inquiries.

CityGML is realized as an open data model and XML-based format for the storage and exchange of virtual 3D city models. It is implemented as an application schema for the Geography Markup Language 3 (GML3), the extendible international standard for spatial data exchange issued by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and the ISO TC211. CityGML is intended to become an open standard and therefore can be used free of charge. For more information, please visit www.citygml.org.

IT/GIS Department Will Deploy Unlimited ArcGIS Software throughout Organization

Redlands, California? The City of Frankfort, Kentucky, population 28,000, has signed an ESRI Small Municipal and County Government Enterprise License Agreement (ELA). This agreement allows all staff in the capital city’s government to access geographic information system (GIS) software that will improve productivity and enhance service to citizens.

“Now the new GIS office in the IT department can deploy desktop, server, and mobile GIS software quickly and uniformly throughout the enterprise without worrying about software license procurement,” said Julsun Pacheco, IT manager, City of Frankfort. “Without this program, we would be unable to deploy GIS to all of our departments and develop the GIS-based applications we need.”

The city is currently using GIS in the police, fire, and E-911 dispatch departments. In addition to providing more departments with GIS software and applications, Pacheco is looking forward to extending GIS capabilities into the field so staff can collect data and edit the GIS database in real time. He also plans to use GIS and GPS to allow dispatchers to view real-time locations of transit buses, maintenance crews, and recycling and sanitation trucks to track the progress of work throughout the day.

“I would like to showcase what GIS can do to enhance operations and the running of the city,” Pacheco said.

The ESRI Small Municipal and County Government ELA program is available to municipalities and counties in the United States with populations of 100,000 or less. The program provides access to ESRI GIS technology with a straightforward, tiered pricing schedule. Advantages include updated versions of GIS software for a consistent platform; flexible deployments to desktops, servers, and mobile devices; and the ability to incorporate GIS into mission-critical applications and workflows.

ESRI’s ArcGIS software is an open and interoperable technology platform that provides advanced visualization and cartographic capabilities, spatial analysis, geographic data management, and more. ArcGIS software is a complete system to author, serve, and use geographic information. The technology gets geographic information to those who need it including analysts, decision makers, field staff, and the public.

For more information, contact the nearest ESRI U.S. regional office (contact information is available at www.esri.com/locations), call 800-447-9778, or visit www.esri.com/smallgovela.
